Bulgarian 3G tenders going to plan

18 Mar 2005

The deadline for bidders to submit a BGL2 million deposit for a Bulgarian UMTS licence expired yesterday, with all three domestic GSM licence holders having met the monetary demand set by the regulator, the Communications Regulation Commission (CRC). The first 3G tender, starting 30 March, will be for one 20-year ‘Class A’ 3G licence (2×10MHz + 1×5MHz) with a starting price of BGL70 million (EUR36.12 million) and possible incremental bids of BGL2 million, to be contested by wireless market leader MobilTel and the new mobile division of Bulgarian Telecommunications Company (BTC). Bidding will start on 5 April for two additional ‘Class B’ licences (2×5MHz + 1×5MHz), each set at BGL42 million (EUR21.67 million) with bids allowed in BGL1 million increments. As it stands, competition for the Class B concessions will come from BTC, MobilTel and the country’s second placed cellco Cosmo Bulgaria.
