Government to award new GSM licences in 2006

16 Mar 2005

According to the Nigerian newspaper This Day, the Federal Government is planning a new round of licensing for GSM licences, and hopes to issue new concessions in 2006. The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Chief Chukwuemeka Chikelu, said the government’s decision was based on the phenomenal success of GSM service in Nigeria. Although details of the planned awards are not yet known, the state is keen to introduce competition when the five-year exclusivity on the provision of mobile telephony services ends in February 2006.
