AIS to trial 3G in May

15 Mar 2005

Thai mobile operator Advanced Info Services (AIS) is reportedly preparing to launch 3G trials in May in partnership with Chinese company Huawei Technologies. According to reports in the Bangkok Post, AIS has selected W-CDMA equipment from Huawei for a pilot trial of services in the 1800MHz frequency band. The cellco already operates a DCS-1800 network and hopes the migration to W-CDMA will be a low-cost alternative to deploying the alternative CDMA2000 1X EV-DO technology. AIS vice-president Vichien Maektrakarn has not disclosed the duration of the trial, but says that investments in W-CDMA will begin in 2006 with a particular focus on Bangkok and the country’s major population areas.
