International suitors line up for Bulgarian UMTS licences

1 Mar 2005

A total of eight potential bidders have purchased public tender documents for the auction of three UMTS licences in Bulgaria. The three domestic GSM licence holders MobilTel, Cosmo Bulgaria and BTC have all acquired a full set of documents, as anticipated. UK-registered First Place International also bought the documents, as did Turkcell, Klubverband-ITA, Koc Holding/Turk Telekom and local company AII Data Processing. Missing from a list of five companies who had previously expressed interest in the 3G licence sale was Scandinavian telecoms group Tele2. The deadline for acquiring the paperwork passed yesterday; bids are now due in by 17 March.
