eircom in trouble over LLU

16 Feb 2005

Ireland’s communications regulator ComReg has threatened the former monopoly telco eircom with legal action if it fails to speed up the process of local loop unbundling (LLU). ComReg has ordered the operator to respond by Friday morning to requests from rival operators which are seeking to gain access to its local infrastructure. The regulator says it issued a similar direction in mid-January which brought no response from eircom and it will apply to the high court for an order allowing it to impose financial penalties if the current deadline is not met.

In a statement, the regulator said: ‘ComReg cannot allow eircom to delay developments that are affecting the ability of other operators to offer increased choice to consumers through innovative broadband offerings and pricing strategies.’ eircom responded by saying that it has appealed the direction from ComReg.
