European support given to Airbus mobile phone system

31 Jan 2005

The European Commission has given commercial approval to the joint venture between France’s Airbus and SITA (Netherlands), named OnAir, to develop onboard communications services for passenger aircraft. The aims of the project include developing in-flight telephony, SMS, email, GSM and internet services. The technology will be designed to work in Airbus and Boeing aircraft. Meanwhile, rival Boeing has developed Connexion, an onboard broadband internet service, and Germany’s Lufthansa has already launched Lufthansa FlyNet, its onboard internet service, due to be available on all its long-haul flights by the end of this year.
