BTC expands GSM network

21 Jan 2005

The Bahamas Telecommunications Company (BTC) is planning to spend USD14 million in the first half of this year on rolling out a new GSM network to the island of Abaco. The company already has coverage of New Providence, where two thirds of the Bahamian population live, and Grand Bahama; all islands in the archipelago are expected to be covered by the end of 2006. As it stands BTC has 140,000 customers, of which 67,000 use the GSM network, with the remainder subscribing to its legacy TDMA service. GPRS/EDGE services are planned for later this year.
