Telecom completes first phase of EV-DO upgrade: plans mid-November launch

4 Nov 2004

New Zealand’s biggest fixed and mobile services provider Telecom says it has completed the first phase of its CDMA2000 1x EV-DO upgrade, and plans to launch the service under the brand name T3G within the next two weeks. The company recently contracted Lucent Technologies to upgrade approximately 25% of its 800 cell sites: initial coverage will be available in Wellington, as well as most of Auckland and Christchurch. The T3G network will first be marketed to business users via a 3G laptop datacard supplied by Sierra Wireless. Telecom hopes the new network will be able to provide transmission speeds of up to 500kbps, compared to the 60-100kbps currently offered.
