Bulgaria’s telecoms regulator, the Communications Regulation Commission (CRC), says that 14 firms, including some of the world’s leading telecoms players, have expressed an interest in securing a licence to compete with incumbent Bulgarian Telecommunications Company (BTC). The CRC plans to issue two concessions for point-to-multipoint wireless services, enabling the licensee to offer voice, data, video and multimedia content services, as well as internet access, at speeds of a minimum 128kbps. The regulator hopes that market newcomers will be able to set up new networks in more remote parts of the country where rolling out traditional copper lines would be uneconomical. It has yet to decide on how best to award the licences, or a deadline for launching the tender document.
