Scandinavian telco TeliaSonera has completed the world’s first EDGE-WCDMA packet data handover as part of trials using Nokia equipment and handsets. TeliaSonera Finland’s network has been upgraded by Nokia to support intersystem handovers nationwide, something which the equipment supplier says is key to the success of mobile data services due to the initially limited coverage by most operators’ 3G networks. The connection was carried out using the Nokia 6630 handset. TeliaSonera Finland, which had around 2.3 million subscribers by the end of June, launched its first commercial 3G services in 20 Finnish cities yesterday. The company is forecasting that 50% of all handsets sold in Finland in 2005 will support EDGE, WCDMA or both.
