Portugal Telecom (PT) is reported to be planning to gain entry into the lucrative Chinese market by using its former colony Macau as a gateway to the mainland; Macau became a Special Administrative Region (SAR) of China in 1999. PT has already expanded its international reach successfully to South America and is contemplating increasing its activity in the Far East. It holds a 28% stake in CTM, Macau’s national PTO which offers fixed, mobile and internet access services to the territory’s 500,000-strong population. It also has a 55% interest in cable TV company TV Cabo Macau and minority interests in two satellite television broadcasters – Telesat and Cosmos. Portugal Telecom’s chief executive Miguel Horta e Costa has recently conducted a tour of the region, holding talks with China Mobile, China Telecom and China Netcom.
