GrameenPhone closes in on two million subscribers mark

2 Sep 2004

Bangladesh’s largest mobile operator GrameenPhone says it nearly doubled its subscriber base to 1.95 million users in the year to 31 August 2004, and hopes to break the two million barrier during the course of this month. Given that Bangladesh is home to more than 130 million people, GrameenPhone is confident of signing up 15 million customers within the next three years. The company said its rapid growth has come despite the adverse effects of the recent floods which have devastated parts of the country. The cellco, which has network coverage of 40% of the population, controls around 60% of the three million-strong mobile market. It has invested USD160 million in 2004 in network expansion projects and plans to extend its reach to full coverage by 2007.
