eircom job cuts hit profits

Fixed line incumbent eircom saw its fiscal first quarter loss more than double to EUR24 million as sales fell by 2% and it took a hit on the high cost of reducing its workforce. Turnover for the three months to the end of June was EUR402 million, but the company booked a EUR48 million charge to account for the removal of 400 employees.
