Operators pay UGS3.3 billion for rural services

16 Aug 2004

The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has received UGS3.3 billion (USD1.91 million) from telecoms operators MTN (UGS2.1 billion), Uganda Telecommunications Limited (UGS1.02 billion) and Celtel (UGS153 million) – the mandatory 1% contribution to the Rural Communications Development Fund (RCDF) for 2003-04. The money will be used to provide basic communications services of acceptable quality at affordable prices in remote parts of the country. The RCDF is expected to be completed by the end of 2005, at which time the 154 sub-counties of Uganda will have at least one internet café, a website and a calling centre.
