Wireline duopoly to end next year

The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has said that it will open up the country’s fixed line market duopoly to full competition by end-2005. Currently only state-owned Uganda Telecom and MTN Uganda, a subsidiary of South Africa’s MTN Group, hold licences to operate in the wireline market.
