Bonklee Plangsiri, the chairman of Thailand’s Shin Corporation, has rubbished recent newspaper reports that the company’s main telecoms subsidiary, cellular operator Advanced Info Services (AIS), is in merger talks with fixed line operator True Corp. According to Dow Jones, Mr Plangsiri told reporters that he expected the Thai telecoms market to undergo further consolidation in the short to medium term, but that his company would wait until the privatisation of state-owned fixed line operators CAT and TOT, and the long-awaited creation of the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) before considering any moves to invest in other service providers. Mr Bonklee said he expects the NTC to be formed by the end of 2004.
