MTN enjoys bountiful first half

Nigerian mobile operator MTN has announced a net profit of NGD24.6 billion for the six months to the end of September 2003, more than double the figure recorded in its full 2002 financial year. The company, which is due to announce its results for the year to 31 March 2004 later this month, had 1.65 million subscribers at the end of 2003, up from 1.38 million three months previously. MTN Nigeria chairman Pascal Dodzie recently announced the formation of the MTN Nigeria Foundation, to which it plans to dedicate 1% of profits which will be used for ‘social responsibilities initiatives’.
