TMN launches 3G

20 Apr 2004

Portugal Telecom’s wireless subsidiary TMN has launched the country’s first 3G service, two and a half months before the Anacom imposed deadline of 1 July. Initial coverage will be limited to Lisbon and Oporto, but will be extended to a further six cities during the summer. The range of 3G handsets is currently limited, with the base model being a EUR699 Siemens phone. Portugal Telecom claims to have invested EUR180 million in the new network.
