Nokia hits back at 3G handset slurs

Jorma Ollila, president and chief executive of Nokia, yesterday refuted claims that substandard 3G handsets were holding up the commercial rollout of 3G services across Europe, saying that it was the unprepared nature of operator networks which was proving the real obstacle to the sector’s development. The Nokia chief’s comments are seen by many as a direct response to recent claims by Vodafone boss Arun Sarin that his company was ready for full 3G launch but was waiting for the availability of handsets which ‘were not bulky and prone to overheating’. Mr Ollila told the annual 3GSM summit in Cannes that the requisite handsets should be available in suitable numbers during the second half of the year.
