In a move designed to embarrass the Portuguese administration, Sonae’s ISP arm has hijacked a conference aimed at promoting broadband internet access in the country by decorating its stand with the slogan ‘Broadband in Portugal is not so broad – only one operator?’ Sonaecom, Portugal’s largest ISP, has also reportedly suspended its broadband service in protest at what it calls Portugal Telecom’s (PT) ‘monopoly of cable and ADSL access’, which it claims makes effective competition impossible. Soneacom claims PT has priced competitors out of the market by charging them wholesale prices. Portugal Telecom claims a 70% share of the cable market and 83% of all DSL connections.
