Cellphone suspected as trigger device for Sofia bomb blast

20 Jan 2004

Four people were killed and seven others injured at the offices of Bul Ins insurance company in Sofia yesterday, in a bomb blast thought to have been set off by a mobile phone. Bulgaria’s Interior Chief Secretary Boyko Borisov said he suspected a cellphone had been used to activate the device which claimed the lives of Stoil Slavov, one of the owners of Interpetrolium and Partners, and bodyguards Petar Petrov and Iliyan Kazakov. No group claimed responsibility for the explosion, thought to be linked to local organised crime, although Slavov has been receiving bomb threats since 2001.
