Wataniya wins third Algerian mobile licence

3 Dec 2003

Kuwait’s National Mobile Telecommunications Company (Wataniya) has won the auction for Algeria’s third cellular phone licence, beating Spain’s Telefónica Móviles and South Africa’s MTN with a bid of USD421 million. Wataniya will compete with Mobilis and Orascom Telecom Algeria. There are currently around 1.3 million mobile users in Algeria, but the government expects that number to be nearer six million by 2005.
