Rogers AT&T Wireless begins EDGE trial

26 Nov 2003

Canadian cellco Rogers AT&T Wireless has begun a trial of Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution (EDGE) technology in the Greater Vancouver area in preparation for the commercial rollout of the service, which is planned to take place in 2004. The next-generation technology has been installed through a software upgrade on the cellco’s network, and will enable users to benefit from higher data speeds of between 100kbps and 130kbps. The operator plans to spend around USD20 million to USD25 million on the deployment of EDGE, and will work in collaboration with Swedish equipment supplier Ericsson.
