Bashair Telecom wins deal to set up new cellco

According to the SUNA News Agency, Bashair Telecom, an Arab company registered in Sudan, has been selected to build and operate a mobile network to run in competition with incumbent cellco Sudanese Mobile Telephone Company (Mobitel). Bashair Telecom is believed to have inked a USD178 million 15-year deal with the state’s Telecommunications Corporation. Work on the new network will begin in the spring of 2004. The Bashair award follows a previous aborted attempt to set up a competitor to Mobitel.
