Conduit to consider fate of 11 88 88

Dublin-based Conduit, which provides directory enquiry services in Europe, is to review its 11 88 88 service in the UK. Despite its audacious claims that its service is ‘faster than the phone book…friendlier by far…and only half the price of BT’s 192’, Conduit has conceded that it has failed to reach the level of call volumes it had expected. The UK directories market is estimated to be worth GBP300 million per annum, but since it was deregulated customer confusion has resulted in a significant drop in enquiry calls. Conduit recently laid off 250 temporary workers and is now reviewing at its call centre in Swansea.
