Mobile subscribers edge closer to five million barrier

The number of Ukrainians owning a mobile phone reached 4.88 million on 1 September 2003, a rise of 7.4% from 4.54 million the previous month. At that date Kyivstar GSM was the market leader with 2.5 million, having boosted its customer base by 8.7% in August. The second spot was claimed by Ukrainian Mobile Communications (UMC) with 2.3 million users, up 6.1% on the previous month. Meanwhile Golden Telecom saw the number of people signed up to its mobile services dip to 38,000, putting it just behind Ukrainian Radio Systems (Wellcom) on 38,999.
