Caribtel to sue C&W for USD21 million

22 May 2003

Jamaican telco Caribtel has announced its decision to claim damages of USD21 million from Cable and Wireless, after the latter terminated a network access agreement. Jamaica’s leading calling card provider began selling call time nine months ago, having agreed to purchase the time wholesale from C&W. It claims however, that C&W contravened Jamaica’s telecoms regulation by withdrawing the use of the network, rendering its calling cards unusable. C&W is reported as saying that it has no intention of reinstating the service and is confident that Caribel’s claims will not stand in court, as Caribtel itself has committed a ‘flagrant breach of contract’.
