TDM splits from M-Cel

8 May 2003

Mozambique’s Transport and Communications Minister Tomas Salomao has confirmed that fixed line incumbent TDM has spun-off its mobile subsidiary M-Cel into a stand alone company. The move is part of the regulator’s bid to encourage competition into the mobile sector; Vodacom won the second mobile phone licence last August but had refused to enter the market until M-Cel was independent from TDM. At the same time the minister announced TDM has been transformed into a limited company, a precondition for the future privatisation of the telco.
