Vodafone soft launches Irish 3G services

2 May 2003

Vodafone Ireland has launched a limited third-generation (3G) mobile service to a number of key customers and has said that it will make the service available to the rest of its subscribers as soon as more handsets become available. The first customers, which are using Nokia 6650 terminals, will provide feedback on issues such as the speed of data downloads and coverage flatspots. Vodafone claims its Irish 3G network currently covers around a third of the population and all of the main towns and cities including Dublin, Cork, Limerick and Galway. The company has said that it will invest ‘several hundred million’ Euros over the next two years developing the offering and extending its coverage.
