Swisscom finally strikes a deal, but not with Telekom Austria

24 Apr 2003

Switzerland’s former monopoly telco Swisscom [NYSE: SCM], whose long-mooted merger with Telekom Austria [NYSE: TKA] appears to have been called off, has had more success with expansion plans in the wireless LAN (W-LAN) market following the purchase of independent Dutch operator Aervik B.V. Swisscom’s European public W-LAN business Swisscom Eurospot will reveal only that it paid ‘well below EUR1 million’ for the 55 hotspots of Amsterdam-based Aervik, to take its total to 69 in the Netherlands alone. Following last month’s acquisition of stakes in independent W-LAN operators Megabeam in the UK and WLAN AG in Germany, Swisscom now has more than 500 hotspot contracts across Europe, with a further 400 available via its roaming partners.
