Mobilkom set to launch 3G services in Austria

16 Apr 2003

Telekom Austria has announced it will commercially launch 3G services in Austria via its wholly-owned mobile subsidiary Mobilkom on 25 April this year. The network will provide data services and video streaming at a transmission speed of 384 kbps. So far the company has invested a total of USD78.3 million in the network, installing 1,000 UMTS base stations serving 54 of the country’s largest cities, with the exception of Salzburg. Until mid July customers may use 3G services free of charge as part of the operator’s promotion of the service. Future plans include the availability of handsets that allow users to alternate between 2G and 3G networks. Hutchison 3G are the only other cellco to offer 3G mobile technology commercially in Europe.
