International Call Volumes and Growth Rates

International call volumes have grown at a compounded annual rate of just over 13 percent over the past 20 years. Traffic growth surged during the period of market liberalization in the late 1990s, peaking at 25 percent in 2000, before returning to levels in line with historical patterns. The era of consistent double-digit growth ended in 2008, when traffic growth slowed to 9 percent, and declined to 5 percent in 2009. TeleGeography estimates that international call traffic grew only 4 percent in 2010, the slowest growth in more than 20 years.
