TIM Brasil boosts Sao Paulo 3G coverage with 900MHz spectrum

3 Sep 2014

TIM Participacoes (TIM Brasil) has announced that 50 Sao Paulo neighbourhoods have witnessed improved connectivity following the deployment of 500 new 900MHz base transceiver stations (BTS) in the city. According to online portal TudoCelular, a further 200 towers are expected to go live by year-end, with a focus on Barueri, Maua, Osasco, Guarulhos and the ABC region. The company’s full deployment of 900MHz infrastructure in Sao Paulo is expected to be completed by the first quarter of 2015, with more than 1,200 antennas set to cover the entire metropolitan area.

Previously, in February this year, Anatel granted the mobile giant a 5MHz block of 900MHz spectrum in Sao Paulo that formerly belonged to defunct operator Unicel do Brasil Telecomunicacoes (Unicel, trading under the banner Aeiou).

According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, Anatel revoked Unicel’s 3G licence on 27 December 2012; the operator had won the frequencies in the watchdog’s 2007 3G auction.
