LIME BVI commits USD7m for network upgrades

27 Aug 2014

Speaking at a press conference in Tortola, British Virgin Islands (BVI) Phil Bentley, CEO of Cable & Wireless Communications (CWC), has confirmed that its local unit LIME BVI is set to benefit from investment of around USD7 million. The BVI Beacon quotes Bentley as saying: ‘That’s an uptick of probably at least 15% from what we used to spend here … I think you know as well as I do that the island has suffered from slow broadband speeds … The biggest complaint customers have around the region is the quality of the networks and the speed of the networks.’ Around USD5 million will be used to upgrade the telco’s copper network with fibre-optic technology, while the remainder will be spent on the introduction of 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology. Bentley, who was appointed CEO of CWC on 1 January 2014, is currently touring the company’s Caribbean operations; a further USD10 million worth of investment has also been pinpointed in Saint Kitts & Nevis.
