MVNO FreedomPop piques interest of ‘major carrier’

26 Aug 2014

A ‘major carrier’ is considering purchasing FreedomPop, the US mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) that piggybacks on Sprint Corp’s network, according to a person familiar with the matter. Fierce Wireless reports that the takeover talks started after Sprint abandoned its efforts to merge with T-Mobile US. The talks were described as ‘formal’, although the two parties are still at the negotiation stage, and the transaction may not come to pass. FreedomPop CEO Stephen Stokols told Fierce: ‘There [are] some inbound enquiries there … We are actually taking it seriously and looking at it.’
