Telkomsel sets end-2014 deadline for 4G launch

21 Jul 2014

Indonesia’s largest mobile operator by subscribers Telkomsel intends to launch 4G services by the end of 2014, Antara news reports sales director Masud Khamid as saying. The director confirmed on Saturday that the company has been granted a licence to operate 4G from the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (MCIT). Masud Khamid said that the new service would be launched first in Bali to be followed by subsequent launches in six other cities. ‘We chose Bali because Bali is the most visited place by foreign tourists. Telkomsel wants to show to the world that Indonesia already applied the latest technology in telecommunications,’ the official said, noting that the cellco successfully carried out Long Term Evolution (LTE) network tests when the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit was held in Bali in 2013. ‘After Bali, in the first quarter of 2015 the 4G service would be launched in six other big cities in the country including Jakarta, Bandung, Surabaya, Makassar, Yogyakarta, and Manado,’ Masud said.
