1800MHz 4G auction delayed until July 2015

18 Jul 2014

Thailand’s military-led administration, the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO), has ordered a one-year delay to the upcoming 4G 1800MHz mobile licence auction, to ensure transparency in the process. The sector regulator, the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) confirmed this morning that it has rescheduled the auction for July 2015. In the meantime the NBTC added it is ‘required to amend its regulations to ensure that the auction is transparent, fair and examinable’, the Bangkok Post reports. In related news this week, the NBTC revealed it will resume its scrutiny into the foreign ownership structure of Thai operators, including Telenor-backed cellco DTAC, to ensure overseas stakes remain below the permitted 49% limit.
