Vip Operator switches on LTE network

3 Jul 2014

Telekom Austria Group, which owns Macedonian mobile operator Mobilkom Macedonia (Vip Operator), has announced the launch of the latter’s 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) network in the country, initially covering some 40% of the population in seven key cities.

According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, Vip Operator submitted its bid for 4G licences to the Agency for Electronic Communications (AEC) on 24 June 2013 and received its concessions the following month. Vip Operator was awarded 2×10MHz frequencies in the 800MHz band and 2×15MHz spectrum in the 1800MHz band. It paid EUR10.3 million (USD13.1 million) for the 20-year authorisations which required that it launch commercial 4G services no later than 1 August 2014.
