MTN Cameroon, the country’s mobile market leader, has announced that it signed up its ten millionth subscriber on 17 June, up from the 9.236 million reported at the end of March. According to the South African-owned company, around 60% of Cameroonians that own a mobile phone use the MTN network. In a statement posted on social media, MTN Cameroon said it has ‘equipped the country with a state-of-the-art and an extended communication network which democratises access to telephony, contributes towards the development of the remotest areas and improves the competitiveness of businesses’. It pledged to continue investing in the development of telecoms in Cameroon and said it would further develop simple, innovative and affordable communication solutions. MTN competes in the mobile market with France’s Orange Cameroun, while TeleGeography notes that a third wireless network operator, Vietnamese military-owned Viettel, is expected to launch 2G and the country’s first 3G services in September.
