Telenor launches Pakistan’s second 3G network

2 Jun 2014

Norwegian-backed cellco Telenor Pakistan has become the second provider to commercially launch 3G services, following on the heels of Pakistan Telecommunication Mobile Ltd (PTML, trading under the Ufone banner). Telenor’s 3G offerings are available in Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad and Rawalpindi, although launches are set to follow in other cities later this year. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, Telenor began an overhaul of its entire network in March 2012 in preparation for the long-delayed allocation of 3G spectrum. The upgrade was completed in March 2014 and saw the operator replace all of its existing equipment with newer gear – more than 21,000 elements were replaced and upgraded over the course of the programme – and making all of the cellco’s roughly 7,500 base stations 3G-ready.
