China to unify cable networks

2 Jun 2014

China has officially launched China Broadcasting Network Ltd, a state-backed vehicle intended to promote the unification of the nation’s cable networks. China Daily writes that the company was launched with a registered capital of CNY4.5 billion (USD729 million) and will focus on cable network construction, operation and maintenance as well as research and development. Heralded as ‘the nation’s fourth network operator’ – after China Telecom, China Unicom and China Mobile – the company has been tasked with driving the consolidation of the country’s myriad cable networks, which operate all over China and at various administrative levels. Beijing has vowed to cut the number of cable networks since 2010 but to date the number of CATV operators is estimated to be in the ‘hundreds’.
