CANTV launches IPTV, higher speed packages

23 May 2014

Venezuelan state-owned telecoms group CANTV on Wednesday 21 May 2014 announced the official launch of IPTV services, alongside faster speed ADSL broadband packages of 8Mbps and 10Mbps (download) for residential and business users, compared to the previous maximum of 6Mbps. CANTV’s commercial IPTV offering includes 87 channels plus video on demand (VoD) content, reports Telesemana. In a first stage, the service will be offered in the Greater Caracas region before spreading to the rest of the country, announced president of CANTV, Manuel Fernandez.

TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database says that in April 2008 CANTV received a 25-year general concession for TV broadcasting, allowing it to install and operate TV transmission systems of any type, fixed or wireless. Chinese vendor ZTE was contracted to provide IPTV equipment, but following trials, CANTV pushed back the planned launch of IPTV several times from its original schedule of late-2009, as it concentrated on the launch and expansion of two other TV platforms: satellite (DTH), launched over the Venesat-1 satellite platform in November 2011 (with around 600,000 DTH service users by end-2013), and digital terrestrial television (DTT) – which saw an ‘official trial’ free-to-air TV channel launch in February 2013, with subsequent expansion taking coverage of 22 DTT stations to a potential 13.5 million viewers.

Alongside its IPTV and DSL upgrade announcements this week, CANTV unveiled a second-phase satellite TV expansion, adding 24 new channels to give a ‘full grid’ of 72 channels offering standard programming, nine channels of Communication & Information System of Venezuela (Sibci), four channels in High Definition (HD), nine radio channels and 20 music channels.
