JD.com, China’s largest direct B2C e-commerce company, yesterday announced that its mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) service will launch commercially on 28 May 2014. The press release said that JD.com will offer mobile phone numbers with the prefix ‘170’ to consumers, while it will reward shoppers on its e-commerce platform who also use its virtual telecom service with additional voice time and mobile internet usage based on the money they spend each month on JD.com. The retailer is one of 19 MVNOs recently licensed in China, the first of which, T.Mobile (non-affiliated with the similar sounding brand of Deutsche Telekom), launched earlier this month.
