Nawras activates 900MHz 3.5G service in new cities

15 May 2014

Omani telecoms operator Nawras has launched a third 3.5G data carrier in the 900MHz band across several large cities in the Sultanate, as part of its extensive network ‘turbocharging’ programme. The company, which is majority owned by Qatar’s Ooredoo, has modernised base stations in the cities of Buraimi, Dhank, Yanqul, Ibri, Rustaq and Nakhal, to provide customers with faster mobile broadband and improved indoor coverage. ‘Being the only telecom service provider in Oman to provide 3G+ services on 900MHz has allowed us to rapidly expand this fantastic service, to cover over 80% of the population,’ commented Sultan Al-Wahaibi, Nawras Network Implementation and Infrastructure director, adding: ‘This is another even bigger step forward in providing a better experience to our customers, which has already been completed across more than 50% of our network. Browsing the internet, video streaming, downloads and online gaming are all much faster and easier than ever.’ Since August 2012 Nawras has invested over OMR80 million (USD207.2 million) in its turbocharging programme, with the aim of providing a nationwide continuous access to its 3.5G mobile network.
