Rostelecom linked with deal for WiMAX operator FreshTel

12 May 2014

Russian national operator Rostelecom is performing due diligence on WiMAX firm FreshTel Russia (InterProject), Kommersant reports. No purchase price has been disclosed, but during 2013 negotiations with TransTelecom (TTK) the wireless broadband provider was valued at USD200 million, albeit down from a mooted figure of USD300 million one year earlier. In the event, TTK backed out of the deal, citing its intentions to secure its own frequencies in the 2.5GHz band, rather than rely on FreshTel’s 3.5GHz spectrum holdings.

According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, FreshTel’s controlling shareholder is Icon Private Equity, a company co-owned by Russian tycoon Suleiman Kerimov and Ukrainian billionaire Viktor Pinchuk.
