Switzerland’s dominant telco Swisscom has reported a 3.2% rise in revenues for the first quarter to 31 March 2014 to CHF2.82 billion (USD3.22 billion), while EBITDA was up 2.9% year-over-year to reach CHF1.06 billion. Net income dropped, however, from CHF388 million to CHF369 million as a result of increased depreciation and amortisation plus higher financial expenses. In its domestic market sales rose by 2.4% to CHF2.09 billion, with losses from price erosion more than offset by gains from customer and volume growth. Revenue from the Italian broadband business Fastweb was down 0.8% at CHF483 million.
In operational terms, the firm’s IPTV offering passed the one million subscriber milestone to reach 1.05 million at the end of March, up 22.3% from a year earlier. Mobile customer numbers rose 2.5% to 6.43 million, while retail broadband access lines increased from 1.75 million a year ago to 1.83 million by 31 March 2014. The number of fixed lines in service dropped by 3.8% to 2.86 million. Fastweb’s broadband subscriber base was up 6.6% to 1.98 million.
