More details needed before Warid can launch 4G, PTA says

6 May 2014

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has called on Warid to submit further details regarding its 4G plans before it will approve the cellco’s request to launch Long Term Evolution (LTE) services, the Tribune writes. As previously noted by CommsUpdate, Warid opted not to participate in the recent spectrum auction for 3G and 4G licences, and has sought the permission of the regulator to offer 4G services using its existing spectrum holdings. PTA Chairman Ismail Shah explained that although Warid’s concession is technology neutral that ‘does not mean that it is service neutral,’ adding that all newly launched service require consent from PTA. Warid is required to submit a proper request to the authority, detailing: ‘how much spectrum would be carved out from the 8.8MHz in 1800MHz band for LTE services and its impact on the existing GSM/GPRS/EDGE customers.’ The watchdog will then consider the application, taking into consideration the terms of the cellco’s licence and the greater interests of the industry, in particular those operators that took part in the recent spectrum auction. According to the PTA official, the regulator’s approval will require assurances with respect to coverage, quality of service and commencement permissions.
