Hon Hai seeking to purchase 22% stake in Asia Pacific Telecom?

6 May 2014

Taiwan’s Hon Hai Precision Industry Co Ltd is in negotiations to acquire a 22% stake in local multi-service operator Asia Pacific Telecom (APT), according to Reuters, citing local media reports. It has been claimed that the rumoured deal could be worth between TWD11 billion and TWD14 billion (USD364.9 million-USD464.5 million), and represents all APT stock held by government-owned enterprises. Official confirmation of the talks were, however, not forthcoming, with an unnamed spokesman for Hon Hai said to have confirmed only that the company was open to all forms of cooperation and hoped to offer 4G services as soon as possible.

As previously reported by CommsUpdate, both Hon Hai and APT were named among the winners of the state’s 4G spectrum auction in October 2013. Following the conclusion of the sale process it was confirmed that Ambit Microsystems Corp, backed by Hon Hai, had claimed a total of 20MHz (‘A3’ block in the 700MHz band and ‘B3’ block in the 900MHz band) for a total of TWD9.18 billion, while Asia Pacific Telecom paid TWD6.415 billion for a 10MHz block in the 700MHz band (block ‘A1’).
