2 May 2014

The United States’ National Cable & Telecommunications Association (NCTA), working in collaboration with the Cable & Telecommunications Association for Marketing (CTAM), CableLabs and Cable Europe, today announced that it will begin using ‘Gigasphere’ as the public name to represent the next generation broadband internet technology – known technically as DOCSIS 3.1 – currently being developed by CableLabs, which is expected to be deployed by cable operators in the near future.

Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification (DOCSIS) 3.1 is the technical specification developed by CableLabs, a non-profit research and development consortium, to enable a new generation of broadband and cable services, and help cable operating companies continue to meet consumer demand for high speed connections.
