Tele2 Norge to enable 4G speeds for heavier data users from 1 May

30 Apr 2014

Norwegian mobile network operator Tele2 Norge has announced that it will activate 4G connectivity for certain subscribers from 1 May 2014. Confirming its plans via press release, the cellco has revealed that it will initially open access to higher-speed mobile broadband services to those of its customers that consume the most data. No additional charges will be made for the increased speeds for those subscribers signed up to the operator’s ‘Large’ and ‘Extra Large’ tariffs, with Tele2 Norge saying that maximum speeds of 40Mbps will be made available. In terms of expanding access, the operator has said it expects the remainder of its customer base – i.e. those not deemed as using enough data – to benefit from the increased speeds no later than the autumn.

Alongside the speed increases, Tele2 Norge has also confirmed that it is boosting the data allowance of its ‘Large’ tariff from 3GB per month to 4GB, saying that the increase will enable customers to leverage the possibilities that 4G connectivity offers. Meanwhile, the operator’s ‘Medium’ package will be reduced in price from NOK249 (USD41.5) per month to NOK199, for both new subscribers and those existing customers not in a contract. Looking ahead, 4G speeds are expected to be made available to ‘Medium’ subscribers, though the operator stopped short of giving an exact date for such a development.

The 4G launch announcement comes despite the fact that Tele2 Norge’s parent company is continuing to consider the cellco’s fate. As previously reported by CommsUpdate, last month Sweden’s Tele2 confirmed it was ‘in the process of evaluating a number of strategic opportunities for its Norwegian operations’. In making the announcement, it was revealed that ABG Sundal Collier Holding ASA has been hired to advise on the different options, which are said to include: entering a strategic partnership; divesting Tele2 Norge to one or several parties; or continuing growing the business organically within the Tele2 Group. Such consideration followed Tele2 Norge’s failure to secure any new spectrum in the government’s 800MHz/900MHz/1800MHz frequency auction, which concluded in December 2013.
